Swimbots are motivated to eat green dots and mate with similarly colored Swimbots. Swimbots eventually die of old age, if they don't starve to death first. Some are very good at making babies who will carry their genes forward in time.

In this artificial life computer simulation by Jeffrey Ventrella, hundreds of virtual organisms compete for resources and mate with one another to evolve different swimming strategies. Swimbots have only two goals during their brief lives: to supply themselves with energy by eating green dots, and to mate with similarly colored Swimbots. Success in either goal depends largely on a Swimbot's ability to orient in a desired direction and swim efficiently. Given enough time, some Swimbots will evolve into swimmers that are better able to propagate their genes into future generations.
Which Swimbot is the most gluttonous? Can you find some excellent swimmers? What new mutants will evolve from this particular population of Swimbots? These are the questions we invite you to explore by playing with this simulator. In 2022, Canton Becker collaborated with Ventrella to randomly generate 342 Swimbots on the fxhash.xyz digital art platform. These were sold as unique (non-fungible) works of algorithmic art. The genetic seeds for these NFTs are permanently and publicly stored on the Tezos blockchain. We have copied each of these NFTs into this Gene Pool simulator for fun and experimentation.
The original sale of Swimbot NFTs has concluded, but some collectors may be re-selling their Swimbots. To purchase a Swimbot NFT on a secondary market, you will need a Tezos wallet and some Tezos cryptocurrency to spend.
